1989: Fall of the Berlin Wall – A European Conversation
1989 was the first successful German revolution. What did it mean to Germany and Europe? Why has the initial enthusiasm for a “Europe whole and free” been replaced by enlargement fatigue? And will the financial crisis produce a new iron curtain?
To mark the pivotal year, the University of Copenhagen and the Danish Foreign Policy Society host a seminar with two of the key actors at the time: The President of the Federal Republic of Germany (1984-1994) Dr. Richard von Weizsäcker and the Danish Foreign Minister (1982-1993) Uffe Ellemann-Jensen in conversation with Prorector Lykke Friis.
The event takes place exactly 20 years after the first major “Monday demonstration” in Leipzig – on 9 October 1989.
The conversation will be followed by a Q&A session.
Registrations for this event is no longer possible, as we are fully booked. A part of the of the conversation will be available on this website Friday afternoon and a webcast of the entire conversation will follow next week.
